Lipno nad Vltavou has a very interesting history. The first time the village was mentioned dates back to 1530; however, the largest settlement called Slupečná, which together with other settlements formed today's Lipno nad Vltavou, was already mentioned in 1281. Before Lipno, Kramolín was mentioned as early as in 1459. In 1575, timber rafting was declared a free enterprise, and so the local peasants started to devote themselves to timber rafting. Near Lipno, about 300 meters from today's dam, there used to be the now flooded Timber-rafting meadow (Vorařská louka), where it was necessary to take the timber rafts apart before the Devil's stream, load them on an ox carriage and transport them to the monastery in Vyšší Brod. It was a lucrative activity, and maybe that is why Lipno nad Vltavou has a golden timber raft in its emblem.
In 1910, there were 575 inhabitants living in today’s Lipno nad Vltavou, primarily of German nationality. In the first months of 1951, when work related to the construction of the Lipno reservoir had begun, wooden houses were built for the permanent workers. These houses and their inhabitants gave rise to the future Lipno nad Vltavou. The original settlement of Lipno was later demolished and, in 1958, flooded by the waters of the Lipno Dam.
The largest building development in this village took place in 1997 when a Dutch investor built one of the largest sailing ports in the whole of Central Europe. Then the construction of a water park followed, along with the development of the local skiing area Lipno - Kramolín, snowboard park, bobsled tracks and other activities.
As the text suggests, Lipno nad Vltavou is suitable for all those who prefer destinations where there is always something to do from the early morning to the late evening. In Lipno nad Vltavou you will find the Marina, a promenade with various shops and cafes, as well as rental services with boats and sports equipment. Nearby there is also a port of the cruisers called Adalbert Stifter and Vltava. Here you will find an eighteen-hole golf course with an area of 72 hectares. There are several hiking trails and cycle paths along the dam with a high-quality asphalt surface suitable for in-line skating as well. Races in water slalom and rafting take place regularly both on the Vltava River below the dam and on the lower and wilder part of the river - the so-called Devil´s Stream (Čertovy proudy).
In winter, Lipno nad Vltavou will not disappoint slope lovers. There are 5 ski slopes lying to the north of the village in the Lipno-Kramolín ski area, located on the northern slopes of the Slupečný hill and Kramolín. In addition to the ski slopes, you will find a newly built snowpark and 35 km of cross-country ski trails.
